PEMIKIRAN PENDIDIKAN ISLAM HUMANIS GUS DUR: RELEVANSI DALAM KONTEKS MULTIKULTURALISME MASYARAKAT BATAM

Abstract

Abdurrahman Wahid’s (Gus Dur) concept of humanist Islamic education emphasizes the importance of upholding humanity, freedom of thought, and acceptance of diversity. This idea is highly relevant in the context of Batam’s multicultural society, which consists of various ethnic, religious, and social backgrounds. This article aims to examine Gus Dur’s humanist Islamic education concept and analyze its relevance in fostering social harmony and strengthening the values of tolerance amidst the heterogeneity of Batam’s society. This study employs a qualitative approach using literature review and contextual social observation methods. The findings show that Gus Dur’s educational principles such as equality, inclusiveness, and respect for minority rights  are highly applicable to Islamic education practices in Batam, both at formal levels (schools and madrasahs) and non-formal settings (pesantren, religious study groups, and community education). The implementation of these values is believed to enhance social cohesion and develop a generation of Muslims who are tolerant, open-minded, and nationally conscious.
